X (Twitter) thread splitter

A thread splitter turns a long piece of writing into a series of posts that each fit inside the 280 character limit. Paste your draft below. It breaks cleanly at word boundaries, adds optional numbering, and lets you copy each post, so you can build a thread without counting characters by hand.

How the thread splitter works

X limits each post to 280 characters, so a long idea has to be broken into several posts that read as a thread. This tool packs as much as it can into each post and only splits at the spaces between words, so a word is never cut in half. When numbering is on, it adds a counter such as 1/5 to the end of every post and sets aside room for it, so the numbered post still fits the limit.

How to post a thread on X

  1. Paste your draft above and copy the first post.
  2. On X, write or paste the first post, then tap the plus icon to add the next one.
  3. Continue until every post is added, then publish the whole thread at once.

Before you post, it is worth running the opening line through our character counter to make sure your hook lands cleanly inside the limit.

Tips for threads that get read

  • Make the first post a complete hook that works even if nobody taps further.
  • Keep one idea per post so each line is easy to follow.
  • Put your strongest point early, not buried near the end.
  • Close with a clear takeaway or a question that invites replies.

Frequently asked questions

What is a thread on X?
A thread is a series of posts connected together so they read as one longer piece. People use threads when an idea needs more than the 280 character limit of a single post.
How many characters can each post in a thread have?
Each post in a thread follows the normal limit of 280 characters on a free account. X Premium subscribers can write longer posts within a thread.
Does the splitter break words in half?
No. The tool only splits at spaces between words, so a word is never cut in the middle. The one exception is a single word longer than the limit, which has to be broken to fit.
What does the numbering option do?
When numbering is on, the tool adds a counter such as 1/5 to the end of each post and reserves room for it, so the numbered post still fits inside the limit.
How many posts can a thread have?
X does not enforce a strict cap for most accounts, but shorter threads tend to get read all the way through. If a thread runs very long, it is often worth tightening it.
Is my text saved?
No. The thread splitter runs entirely in your browser. Your draft is never uploaded or stored.
