Accessibility warning: the flipped version is built from foreign-alphabet characters, so a screen reader announces the actual Cyrillic, Greek, and phonetic letters underneath, which makes a flipped sentence pure noise to anyone using assistive tech. The trick behind flipped text
There is no rotate operation in text, so the effect is a two-part illusion. Each letter is replaced by a character borrowed from a completely different writing system that happens to look like the original turned 180 degrees: phonetic IPA letters supply most of the lowercase (ɐ, ǝ, ɥ, ʞ), Cyrillic lends Ԁ for P, Greek contributes Λ for V, and a few digits reach into CJK blocks (ㄣ for 4, ㄥ for 7). Then the string is reversed end to end, so that when you physically rotate your phone, the words run left to right in the right order.
The illusion has known gaps. Letters that look the same rotated, like l, o, s, x, and z, keep their normal glyph, and H, N, O, S, X, Z, 0, and 8 are their own flips. Punctuation joins in where unicode allows: ? becomes ¿, ! becomes ¡, and paired brackets swap sides so they still open and close correctly.
Using it on X without regretting it
The strongest use is a single flipped line as a punchline or a pattern interrupt in an otherwise normal post: the reader notices, tilts their head, gets the joke, moves on. It pastes fine into posts, bios, and display names. What does not work is flipped text as a running style. It is slow to read, it cannot be searched, and to assistive technology it is a stream of foreign letters with no meaning, so anything that matters should appear right side up nearby.

- How does upside down text actually work?
- Two steps. First, every character is swapped for a lookalike glyph from elsewhere in unicode that happens to resemble the letter rotated 180 degrees: a becomes the phonetic ɐ, e becomes ǝ, P becomes the Cyrillic Ԁ, 4 becomes the Bopomofo ㄣ. Then the whole string is reversed, so the sentence reads left to right again when you physically turn the screen upside down.
- Why do some letters look unchanged after flipping?
- A few characters are close enough to rotationally symmetric that no swap is needed or possible: l, o, s, x, z, plus H, I, N, O, S, X, Z and the digits 0 and 8 look about the same either way. That is not a bug in the tool, it is geometry.
- Does punctuation flip too?
- Most of it. Question marks become the inverted ¿ from Spanish, exclamation points become ¡, commas and apostrophes trade places, and brackets swap with their partners so parentheses still enclose correctly in the flipped string.
- What is the reversed-only row for?
- Comparison and a milder gag. It runs your text through the same reversal but keeps the normal letters, so it reads backwards without the flipped glyphs. It also makes the mechanism visible: upside down text is exactly this reversal plus the lookalike substitution on top.
- Is flipped text safe for screen readers?
- No, and this style is the worst offender of all the unicode tricks. A screen reader reads what the characters really are, so a flipped sentence comes out as a stream of unrelated phonetic, Cyrillic, and Greek letters. It is pure noise to assistive tech. Use it for one short punchline and put the real message in plain text.
