Enter your numeric ID above and your deep link appears here, ready to copy. Everything happens in your browser; the ID and message never leave this page.
How to make a DM link
- 1
Enter your numeric user ID
Paste your X user ID, the immutable number behind your handle. The widget explains where to find it.
- 2
Add optional prefilled text
Type a short opener the sender's DM box will start with. They can edit it before sending.
- 3
Copy the link
The deep link updates live as you type. One click copies it, and a test link opens it in X.
- 4
Place it where people decide
Drop it in your bio, at the end of a lead-magnet thread, or in your newsletter footer.
The format, and how to find your numeric ID
The link is simply https://x.com/messages/compose?recipient_id=YOUR_ID, with an optional &text= parameter for the prefilled message. The only catch is that X hides your numeric ID in its own UI, so here is how to get it:
- Use a third-party lookup like ilo.so/twitter-id, which converts any handle to its numeric ID in seconds.
- Or request your archive under Settings, Your account, Download an archive of your data, and read the account ID from the export.
- Or, if you use the X API anywhere, the user object's id field is exactly this number.
Where DM links earn their keep
- Link-in-bio, the end of lead-magnet threads ("DM me and I will send it over"), and newsletter footers are where these convert best, because the reader has just decided to reach you and the link removes every step in between.
- Pair it with open DMs. If message requests from everyone are off, the link dead-ends for anyone who does not already follow you, which is exactly the audience a CTA is for.
- Keep prefilled text short, a few words like "Saw your thread on pricing". A full paragraph of prewritten pitch feels automated and gets deleted or ignored.
Frequently asked questions
- Why do I need a numeric ID instead of my username?
- X's message compose endpoint only accepts the recipient's immutable numeric ID, not the handle. Usernames can change at any time, so the deep link is built on the number that never does. It also means your link keeps working even if you rename your account.
- Does the link work if my DMs are closed?
- Only for people who you follow or who can already message you. To make the link work for everyone, open message requests: Settings, Privacy and safety, Direct Messages, then allow message requests from everyone. Otherwise non-followers hit a dead end.
- Can I prefill a message?
- Yes. The optional text field becomes a text parameter on the link, and the sender's compose box opens with it already typed. They can edit or delete it before sending, so treat it as a suggested opener, not a script.
- Does the DM link work on mobile?
- Yes. It is a normal x.com link, so on phones with the X app installed it hands off to the app and opens the compose screen directly. On desktop it opens the DM composer on x.com.
- Is a DM deep link against X's rules?
- No. The messages/compose URL is an official deep link format X supports, the same one X's own share sheets use. You are just building it by hand instead of hunting for it.
