How to download an X profile picture

  1. 1

    Enter any username

Type an X handle, yours or any public account. No login and no notification to anyone.

  2. 2

    We fetch the full-size image

The tool reads the public profile and swaps X's tiny cached thumbnail URL for the full 400x400 original.

  3. 3

    Preview it large

See the avatar at full size before saving, plus the 1500x500 header banner when the account has one.

  4. 4

    Download as a proper file

One click saves a named .jpg to your device, no right-click guessing and no blurry thumbnail.

X image sizes worth knowing

  • Profile pictures display at 400x400. X also serves a tiny cached "_normal" version at just 48x48, and that is the one most people accidentally save, which is why downloaded avatars usually look blurry.
  • Header banners are 1500x500. If you are grabbing your own as a template for a redesign, that is the canvas size to design against.
  • Legit uses: backing up your own current avatar before you change it, building a press kit or media page about someone, and reference for commissioned fan art.
  • One respectful line: these are public images, but using someone's photo to pose as them is impersonation. Admire the avatar, do not wear it.

Frequently asked questions

What resolution do I get?
400x400 pixels for the profile picture, which is the largest size X serves through its public image URLs. Banners come through at their native 1500x500. If the account uploaded something smaller, you get whatever X stored.
Can I download my own old profile pictures?
No. Only the current picture is public. Once you change your avatar, X stops serving the old one at the public URL, so grab a backup while it is still live.
Does the person know I downloaded their picture?
No. This is the exact same public image their profile page serves to every visitor. Nothing touches their account and no notification exists for it.
Why not just right-click and save from their profile?
Two reasons. On several X surfaces the image you can grab is the cached _normal version, which is only 48x48 pixels and looks terrible anywhere else. And the download here goes through a proxy that forces a real file download with a clean filename instead of opening a tab.
Is downloading someone's profile picture allowed?
The image is public profile data that X serves to anyone. Saving it for a backup, a press kit, or reference is fine. Using someone's photo to impersonate them is against X's rules and often the law, so do not.
Is the profile picture downloader free?
Yes, 25 lookups per day with no account. There is no watermark and the file is untouched, exactly as X serves it.
